Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician (WTMT) Apprenticeship

This Apprenticeship is for people who wish to pursue a career in the maintenance of large scale commercial wind turbines. It is designed to meet the needs of the growing Irish Renewable and Sustainable Energy sector. The WTMT Apprenticeship adopts an ‘EARN WHILE YOU LEARN’ model so Apprentices are paid for the duration of their Apprenticeship.

The Apprenticeship is aimed at applicants who are at least 18 years of age. It will provide training in occupational areas associated with the role of Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician, including health and safety, and maintenance and fault finding of electrical, mechanical, control and hydraulic systems.

Programme Structure

You will be trained in a progressive manner so that on  successful completion of the Apprenticeship you will be fully competent in the role of Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician.

You will be trained and assessed both on and off the job.
The training is set out in phases so that you will get to put your skills into practice on the job at the end of each period of training off the job.

The following modules will be completed as part of the WTMT Apprenticeship:

On the Job Experience

YEAR 2

YEAR 3

Electrical Systems 3 | Mechanical Systems 3 |
Diagnostics and Locating Faults on Wind Turbine Components |
On the Job Experience | Capstone Assessment

 

Is it for me?

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • QQI Level 4 Major Award (or equivalent), or at least 3 years trade related experience.
  • Pass Grade in Maths at Level 3 (or equivalent).
  • B2 Level of English Language proficiency.
  • Ability to work at heights of up to 100m is essential.
  • Excellent colour vision is essential (an assessment will be required in advance of registration).
  • Good level of physical fitness.
  • Safety focused.
  • Interest in Energy sustainability and efficiency.
  • Solid literacy, verbal and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to plan and prepare work.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Good hand/eye co-ordination, manual dexterity and spatial aptitude.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

What’s the Certification ?

Upon successful completion, the newly qualified Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician will receive a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Industrial Wind Turbine Engineering.
